Antifouling paint is a protective coating applied to the bottom of boats to prevent marine growth, which increases drag and fuel consumption. The right choice depends on your boat's material, speed, and the specific water conditions you encounter.
Types of Antifouling
Self-Polishing (Soft/Ablative) - Slowly erodes over time, exposing a fresh layer of biocide. This is ideal for sailing boats and slow-to-moderate speed powerboats (up to 30 knots) that are used regularly, as the movement helps the polishing process.
Hard - Forms a durable, non-eroding surface that constantly releases biocides. It is suitable for high-speed vessels (over 30 knots), racing yachts (can be burnished for a smooth finish), and boats kept in drying mud berths. This type may require sanding to prevent paint build-up over the years.
Biocide-Free/Foul-Release - These use a non-toxic, super-slippery silicone surface that marine life finds hard to stick to. Growth typically falls off when the boat moves at speeds above 7-8 knots, or it can be easily wiped away. Products like Hempel Silic One are effective options, especially in environmentally sensitive areas.
Important Considerations
Hull Material: Never use copper-based antifouling on an aluminum boat, as it can cause galvanic corrosion. Use a specific copper-free or hard antifouling designed for aluminum.
Water Type: Fouling conditions vary by location and salinity (salt, fresh, or brackish water). Some paints are all-purpose, while others are specific, so always check the manufacturer's data sheet for suitability.
Application & Safety: Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, safety goggles, and a suitable mask, and work in a well-ventilated area. Ensure proper disposal of all hazardous waste according to local regulations.
Specialist Antifoul Options
Different areas of your boat may require targeted protection. Using purpose-made coatings helps maximise performance and longevity.
- Transducer antifoul helps protect depth sounders and speed log transducers without affecting signal accuracy.
- Outboard & Sterndrive antifoul is specifically used on outboards and sterndrives which remain in the water.
- Inflatable boat antifoul is specially formulated for PVC or Hypalon RIBs and tenders, preventing damage while still offering reliable protection.
