Waldringfield Sailing Club: A Century of Sailing 1921-2021
Three years in the making, 460 pages, over 1,100 photos and illustrations, 200,000 words, and a cast of thousands, the WSC Centenary book is finally about to see light of day. Meticulously pieced together from the Club’s Minute Books and correspondence records, as well as including many personal narratives and contributions, this is a history like no other.
In 1921, an eclectic group of eleven enthusiasts sat down in Gorse Cabin, a small First World War Nissen hut the roof and supports of which is still there, to the south of the clubhouse, on the Waldringfield shoreline and created Waldringfield and Hemley Sailing Club. They set some basic rules and arranged a programme of races. Many of these families are still involved in the Club four generations later. Along the way there are many interesting stories. Some have become legends, many are long forgotten, and some are best forgotten, but they are all mostly included in the book. It is an absorbing discovery of the Club and its members.
The Club has a fascinating history, of which many members are unaware. In A Century of Sailing: Waldringfield Sailing Club 1921 to 2021, the key characters, its complicated relationships with the local church, the brewery that operated the local pub, the village and those who worked there are explored in detail.
Waldringfield Sailing Club was originally based on glebe land, leased from the church and other land leased from the pub, but over a period of 75 years this slowly changed, and the Club would become one of the biggest landowners in the village with a membership growing from eleven to over 800. These key moments, and how they happened, define the Club and its members as it is today.
The history of the Club is split into four extensive sections, each covering a quarter century. In addition, there are chapters covering all the main classes adopted by the club, with many other chapters on property, the clubhouse, the galley, Deben Week, Cartoons, Easter Eggs, famous members, designers, and trophy winners. As well as describing all the key moments and personalities in the Club’s history, it is also a reflection of time past and the social and cultural aspects of the past century.
A Century of Sailing: Waldringfield Sailing Club 1921 to 2021 is illustrated with hundreds of previously unpublished photos and provides a unique insight into the development of the Club and how it overcame many challenges along the way through innovation and hard work.
